Green Spaces

The green spaces of South Perth have been getting better over the last few years and progress is still being made. Perth and Kinross Council have just completed the first phase of improvements to the South Inch, namely the renovation of the boating pond. It has been transformed into a pond that is also a wildlife haven. The swans have voted with their nest and set up home there on the new island. The plants will attract many new invertebrates like water beetles and mayfly, potentially fish that may colonise it, and flying insects hatched from the pond will feed birds and bats. The plants will help to improve the water quality. Two board walks over the water will allow people to enjoy the wildlife of the pond close up and with dry feet.
On St Magdalene’s Hill many orchard trees have been planted by South Perth Green Spaces Group and the 10th Perthshire Scouts have been helping to look after Hilton Wood, the wilder part of St Magdalene’s on the other side of the bypass. They have put up more nest boxes, protected seedling oaks and cleared fallen branches from paths. Aviva, Perth Six Circle and Scottish and Southern Electricity employees have all been removing tree shelters and cutting back vegetation from paths to make the place look better. It may have been a hard winter but South Perth in summer is looking good. For more information about SPGSG contact Fergus Cook on 01738 475377 or email FCook@pkc.gov.uk
