South Perth Community Garden

Update July 2011

The Community Garden Project is moving full steam ahead.  Since February the composting toilet has been installed, the paths laid, the site levelled for the raised bed areas, the 2 sheds installed and about 30 of the 64 raised beds built and positioned.  On Monday the 2nd of May  some of the group and a few local people and workers helped to build a living willow arbour and bench on the site as well as starting to do a bit of weeding and planting the 25 fruit tree’s that the project were given by  Orchard 800. Again on the 8th of June there were about 30 volunteers on site from Scottish and Southern Energy, Castle Huntley and Birch Avenue Day Centre and Six Circle Project. The volunteers  were all there to start filling the raised beds with the gravel and topsoil, strimming, weeding (as always!) and to generally tidy up. The site looked fantastic at the end of the day but it will be a few more weeks and a lot more manpower before all the raised beds are filled.  Although it is anticipated that most of the major physical work will be completed by the end of June.

The project has been funded by the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund and Mark’s and Spencer’s Greener Living Fund and a group of local people and representatives from Perth & Kinross Council and local projects have worked tirelessly for the past 2 and half years to make the project  viable. The group have a lease for the site for 15 years so  it will remain a prized local asset for some time.
